It was created by upgrading the erstwhile KIttur Rani Channamma Postgraduate center art Belagavi which was established by Karnataka University, Dharwad in 1982. It is named after Kitturuk Rani Channamma, the queen of the princely state of Kittur in Karnataka. This university is a public university.
